Non-Supermarket Shopping in Dorking

Dorking SOS Registration

Dorking SOS are not opposed to supermarkets, they are a fact of life for all of us. However, there are alternatives that not everyone is aware of, so we have produced a quick guide on how to avoid the supermarkets in Dorking for at least some of your food shopping. How much of this will be possible if a new superstore is built in the town centre?

  • Start buying more produce from local stores. Dorking High Street still has a handful of shops selling food and other items sourced from the local area. Begin the process today of supporting the local economy more proactively.

  • Visit the markets! You'll save yourself a lot of money as well as picker up fresher, tastier produce. There are two Markets held in Dorking - a weekly market held every Friday and a Farmers' Market held on the second Wednesday of every month (ironically on the very site where the proposed store is to be built). Some local traders (including a butchers and a fruit and veg stall) can also be found at the Car Boot Sale at the Train Station on Sunday mornings.

  • If convenience is the name of the game, try getting milk, veg, fruit, and meat boxes delivered to your door.

    • The Surrey Gourmet Dorking produce weekly local meat and fruit/vegetable boxes.

    • Organic vegetable boxes come from local firm Greener Greens as well as numerous other companies.

    • Start getting your Milk Delivered. Local milk company Unigate have also started delivering organic vegetable boxes, in addition to the many other products they handle.

    • Find all your local food suppliers from Big Barn.

  • Dust off your recipe books and begin cooking more frequently rather than buying processed (fully or partially) food from the supermarkets. It's cheaper, tastes better and you'll live longer if you eat it!
